Blu-Ray or HD DVD? Neither!

If you're not already aware, there's a fierce battle between supporters of two upcomming DVD formats brewing. Current DVD media and players simply can't hold the amount of data required for High Deffinition quality movies. So the betamax vs. VHS style debate looms on, generating buzz and plenty of press coverage as to who will prevail as the ultimate winner. I could personally care less and let me tell you why.

Records, tapes, CD's and traditional DVD's have become obsolete in just that order (ok traditional DVD's aren't quite obsolete yet, but they will be whether you believe me about HD/Blu ray or not). I also think HD DVD and BluRay DVD's are becomming obsolete. "What!!?? HD DVD and Blu Ray DVD's aren't even availible in the US yet! How can they possibily be obsolete?" Let's take a step back and consider why CD's have become old news? I think a few keywords like convenience, iTunes, iPod and space; should do the trick. Which brings me to my next question. If we could just download (or stream) any HD quality movie we want, when we want it without having to go out to the video store, without having to rent and return movies (or without having to wait for them in the mail), without having to worry about scratched disks, without having to clutter your living room, would you really be compelled to rush out to Best Buy to pickup an new DVD player? I think the answer will again come from Apple, they've expanded the capibilities of iTunes, the iPod and the Mac line up (save the PowerMac) to set the stage for getting our movies like we get our music (what we want, went we want it, where we want it, and as much of it as we can handle). And if you're savy enough you'll have no problem connecting your Mac Mini as a set top box for you HD television.

So keep your eye on Apple, stay away from HD and Blu Ray if you can!
